The Liposuction Procedure: Everything You Need To Know
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you almost certainly have heard the term “liposuction.” But what really is a liposuction? Who does it help? And what should you expect if you undergo one?
If you are considering any type of cosmetic procedure, you will need some sound information to ensure that your decision is a good one. Here are some questions that patients who come into our clinic in Miami for liposuction typically have about the procedure.
What is a liposuction?
The liposuction procedure is a type of minimally invasive surgery involving the removal of excess fat to help slim the contours of the body. This procedure is normally performed to remove stubborn fat from the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, ankles, arms or neck. It is performed by a plastic surgeon who inserts a device known as a cannula into the area, through which fat is sucked out.
Who makes the best candidate for a liposuction?
The procedure is very helpful for contouring and refining parts of the body unresponsive to diet and exercise. These stubborn fat pockets can form due to age, pregnancy, genetic conditions or weight fluctuations. You may be a good candidate for this procedure if your goal is to slim your profile to achieve a more attractive appearance.
It is vital to keep in mind that liposuction should not be used as a weight loss procedure. You need to already be close to your ideal weight. If you find that you have stubborn areas of fat that are unresponsive to changes in diet and exercise, this procedure may be right for you.
Even though the great majority of people qualify for a liposuction, the procedure is not for everyone. It is not recommended for those dealing with an illness or medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, restricted blood flow or a weakened immune system.
The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for a liposuction is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Antún at our Miami liposuction treatment center. He will go over your medical history and inquire about your goals and expectations. If you qualify for the procedure, you will be provided with detailed instructions so that you understand every step of the process, from the surgery itself to your recovery.

Can I have another procedure performed alongside my liposuction?
In many cases, patients can also have an additional procedure performed in conjunction with their liposuction. If it meets your aesthetic goals, you may want to consider undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure along with your liposuction. This procedure is very helpful in lifting and reshaping the buttocks using the patient’s own natural body fat. You will be pleased with the enhancement of the shape of your body, leading to a much slimmer and toned appearance.
The Liposuction Procedure
The precise details of your procedure are dependent upon your current medical condition, areas of concern, aesthetic goals and procedure logistics. During your consultation with Dr. Antún, he will describe the most appropriate treatment technique for your individual situation.
You may receive either local or general anesthesia prior to your procedure, depending upon the unique type of surgery that you require. When you are comfortable and ready, incisions will be formed in out-of-the-way locations so that any resulting scarring is minimal and less visible. Next, Dr. Antún will insert a device called a cannula, which is a thin tube, into soft tissues in the treatment area. This allows fat to be removed through the cannula. Finally, sutures or stitches are used to seal the area.
What should I expect during my liposuction procedure recovery?
It is normal to experience some swelling, soreness, or bruising at the treatment location following your liposuction procedure. Any soreness that you experience can be easily treated using pain-relieving medication.
Expect to be fitted with an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling, as well as to provide skin compression, which encourages it to conform to its new shape. At the time of your surgery, you will be provided with all necessary details regarding post-procedure care, including care of the surgical site so that your recovery will be swift and uncomplicated.
Most patients find that they are able to resume work activities within a week or two after their surgery. However, it is important to avoid vigorous physical activity during this time. You will also be meeting with Dr. Antún and his team periodically to assess your recovery.
